Environmental Ship Index

Promoting Safer and Cleaner Shipping

Shipping and port operations all contribute to increased greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that can seriously affect our climate. The world’s key ports have committed themselves to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This commitment is called the World Ports Climate Initiative (WPCI). One of the projects within WPCI is the development of an Environmental Ship Index (ESI). The Environmental Ship Index (ESI) identifies seagoing ships that perform better in reducing air emissions than required by the current emission standards of the International Maritime Organization. The ESI evaluates the amount of nitrogen oxide (NOX) and sulphur oxide (SOX) that is released by a ship and includes a reporting scheme on the greenhouse gas emissions of the ship. The ESI is a good indication of the environmental performance of oceangoing vessels and assists in identifying cleaner ships. SOHAR Port and Freezone is proud to support this important initiative and uses the ESI to reward cleaner ships by discounting Port tariffs through the Green Award scheme. www.environmentalshipindex.org/public/home
Green Award for Ships that are Extra Clean and Extra Safe.

By rewarding higher safety and environmental standards in shipping, Green Award helps to make above standard ship operation economically more attractive. The Green Award certification scheme is open to oil tankers, chemical tankers and dry bulk carriers from 20,000 DWT and upwards, as well as LNG and container ships. Green Award certification is carried out by the executive body of the independent and not-for-profit Green Award Foundation, and consists of an office audit and an audit of each individual ship applying. The assessment focuses on crew, operational, environmental and managerial elements. SOHAR joins other ports in Belgium, Canada, Latvia, Lithuania, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Portugal and South Africa in granting Green Award vessels a considerable reduction in port dues. Green Award certificates, subject to annual verification, are valid for three years at a time.
